Pretty Woman, Most Influential Rom-Com of the 20th Century, Turns 25
The classic romantic comedy film, Pretty Woman, is still a classic for romantic comedy fans everywhere, even as the film approaches its 25th anniversary. The movie debuted in theaters in 1990, and subsequently became one of the biggest movies of the year. The movie, telling the fairy-tale like story of a call girl who earns the love of a wealthy businessman, had an influence that extended to many movies after it, and changed the genre of romantic comedy as a whole.
For one, the success of the movie led to Julia Roberts becoming an A-list movie star, and the movie itself was the first romantic comedy to earn $100 million dollars. This changed the view of the genre, to one that was capable of manufacturing female movie stars that would become equals to the likes of Tom Cruise and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The movie also served to become the model structure for a successful romantic comedy movie. It established the star of a romantic comedy to be beautiful, but also a little bit goofy and also made the trope of transformation which is seen is movies like “She’s All That” and “Miss Congeniality” become so popular that they are now considered to be cliche.
